Meet RyuForge: The Man Behind the Dragon

Not every musical journey follows a straight line.

RyuForge wasn’t born in a recording studio, and it wasn’t born with the arrival of artificial intelligence. In many ways, it began decades ago with a kid who simply wrote differently.
Even in school, I was often told that my writing was unorthodox. Teachers would correct the style, not necessarily because what I had written was wrong, but because it wasn’t the style the assignment called for. So I would rewrite it the way they wanted, finish the assignment, and eventually go right back to writing my way.
I don’t remember exactly when those writings first became lyrics.
Music had always been around me. My parents listened to what would now be considered classic country, music I still enjoy today, but even as a child, I found myself drawn toward the hard rock I heard around me. As I got older, hard rock led me into heavy metal. Then heavier metal. Then industrial metal. The harder it got, the more interested I became.
As a teenager, I worked on a movie set based in the 17th century. Walking through those sets and environments gave me images and scenes that found their way into some of my early, darker writing. The money I made working on that movie helped me buy my first Les Paul guitar and a Gallien-Krueger amplifier.
Around the same time, a close friend bought a bass.
We learned together.
Eventually, we found a few other people and spent our teenage years playing, experimenting, writing and making music together. We weren’t thinking about building careers. We were young and creating because we loved doing it.
Then life happened. As my family grew, priorities changed. Eventually, I sold that Les Paul because supporting my family mattered more than owning a guitar. But the writing never stopped.
Through the years, there were scraps of paper, folders of lyrics, ideas, notes about how songs should sound and pieces of music that existed in my head, even when there wasn’t a practical way for me to turn them into finished recordings. Eventually, I bought another guitar, an ESP, and continued playing on my own whenever life gave me the time.
The years between selling that Les Paul and the birth of RyuForge in 2026 were a tangled fever of life.
There was heartbreak and love. Marriage and divorce. Family. Children. Death. Friendships that began and friendships that ended. There was military service, experiences and injuries that left lifelong marks, both physical and mental. I lived and travelled throughout Canada. Through it all, I became a father and tried to teach my children some of the things life had taught me: stand up for yourself, stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, understand the importance of family, and recognize that sometimes life demands sacrifices that can feel dire when you’re the one making them. And through all of it, there were cars.
My passion for vehicles started when I was a child. I was the smallest one in the family, which apparently made me the perfect backyard mechanic. I could be lifted into an engine bay and told where to put a wrench, where to paint or how far down I needed to reach. Other times, I was directed underneath a truck to work somewhere nobody else could easily get to.
Those childhood chores became a lifelong passion for building, modifying and working on cars. Today, that passion includes several custom-built Japanese cars and ongoing projects, but the attraction has never really changed. I enjoy taking something apart, understanding it, changing it and ultimately creating something that reflects me.
In an unexpected way, music eventually came back into my life through one of the same people who had been there near the beginning.
Late in 2025, the friend who had bought that bass when we were teenagers contacted me and asked me to listen to a song. He didn’t explain what it was.
I listened. My reaction was basically, “What the hell? That’s one of our songs.”
It was music we had written and created as teenagers, except now I was hearing it brought to life in a way I hadn’t heard before.
He laughed and explained that he’d been experimenting with an AI music application.
That moment opened a door.
We started playing around with the technology, eventually finding better tools and learning what they could and couldn’t do. At first, it was simply fun. We experimented with some of those old songs, and that’s largely where those songs have remained.
But I started wondering what would happen if I took some of the material I had continued writing over the years and tried bringing that to life.
Suddenly, years of writing had a path forward.
Eventually, I played some of the results for friends. Their response was simple: these songs needed to be heard.
I wasn’t convinced yet. To me, they weren’t finished. They still needed work. Editing. Adjustments. Final production. Mastering. I needed to figure out exactly what this thing was going to become.
If I was going to take these songs beyond a few friends and actually bring them to the public, I needed a name. But I didn’t want just any name. I wanted something that meant something to me, something that reflected who I was, where I had been and the philosophy I had carried through life.
My girlfriend knew about my lifelong love of dragons, and the idea of “Ryu” entered the conversation. At the same time, I kept coming back to something that had carried me through everything life had put in front of me: no matter what happens, you keep moving forward. You keep forging forward.
Eventually, she brought those two pieces together.
RyuForge.
The dragon and the forge. A name that represented not only something I loved, but something I had lived.
And in 2026, RyuForge was born.
The Writing
My approach to lyrics hasn’t changed much from that kid whose teachers kept telling him he wrote differently.
I’ve been told many times that I write in an unorthodox manner, but I don’t really notice myself doing it.
I tend to write in short lines. Each line has a direct intention. It may be an emotion, a thought, an image, a movement or simply the next piece of what I’m trying to express. I don’t typically write to rhyme.
That’s not because I have anything against rhyming. I simply don’t believe a thought should be twisted into different words just because the last word needs to rhyme with something that came before it. Sometimes forcing a rhyme changes the emotion or takes something away from the raw material I started with. For me, what the line needs to say matters more.
Most of the current RyuForge catalogue comes directly from personal experiences, people, memories and pieces of my life. Some songs are serious. Some are painful. Some are angry. Some are about love. And some exist simply because life can also be ridiculous, funny and worth enjoying.
The music doesn’t need to live inside one emotional box because neither does life.
AI and RyuForge
I don’t hide the fact that RyuForge is AI-assisted. AI is a tool, and for me, it has become an incredibly useful one.
The process begins before I ever open a generative music application. I write my own lyrics and develop the idea, emotion and direction of the song. I think of what I hear in my head and how to convey that, how I want the song to move and what I need the production to accomplish.
I also use ChatGPT during that development process to help explore production ideas and translate what I’m trying to accomplish into tightly structured prompts that generative music software can understand within its character limitations. Once I have that direction, the experimentation begins.
I load the lyrics and production prompt, adjust the various parameters and use a voice sample based on my voice. Depending on the song, I may hum a melody or individual musical passages to communicate what I’m hearing in my head. Other times, I’ll deliberately give the system less melodic guidance and see how effectively the production direction translates on its own.
And then I listen. Again and again.
If something isn’t right, I change it. I adjust settings. I alter the production instructions. I may make small lyrical edits. I’ll try different approaches. If repeated adjustments still aren’t producing what I intended, I’ll throw out that approach and build a new prompt.
I keep working until I hear the song I was hearing in my head before I ever went to AI.
And even then, I consider that a rough version.
That version goes into the studio, where I edit it, adjust it and add additional tracks where needed to create the finished production I want. From there, it moves to the computer for final editing before being mastered for release.
AI didn’t replace my involvement in music, it removed barriers.
Because of my own limitations, including anxiety, major depressive disorder, PTSD and lasting physical injuries, there are realities to pursuing music today that are very different from when I was a teenager with a Les Paul and a group of friends.
AI assistance has allowed me to forge forward with musical ambitions I gave up as a teenager.
I understand that my music won’t be for everyone. I also understand that there will be people who hear the words “AI-assisted” and immediately decide they don’t like it. That’s their loss. Because what’s inside these songs isn’t artificial.
The music is filled with soul, passion, love, hate, memories, mistakes, loss, humour and lived experience. AI didn’t live those experiences. I did.
It has simply helped me bring those worlds into a medium where other people can finally hear, enjoy and feel them.
Sharing a Moment
RyuForge isn’t about convincing everybody to like my music.
It’s about connection.
If somebody is going through a difficult period in their life and hears something in one of my songs that makes them realize they aren’t alone, then the song has accomplished something. If someone can put on a RyuForge track and feel alive inside that music, that’s something. If somebody finds solace in a song, or it gives them five or ten minutes of relief from whatever is happening in their world, that’s enough.
We’ve shared a moment.
That philosophy is particularly important to Ouroboros Syndrome, an album in which almost every song is connected in some way to mental health struggles, including experiences that can affect military veterans. Fifty percent of the royalties from that project are being committed to mental health awareness and mental health awareness for veterans.
The Ouroboros itself represents continuity: the cycle continues.
For me, it also connects naturally to the philosophy behind RyuForge.

Behind RyuForge, the lyrics, the production, the cars, the experiences and everything else, I’m still simply a human being.
I like my coffee in the morning.
I enjoy the daily messages between friends and family and, increasingly, the friendships and connections I’ve made within the music world.
I spend time with my two dogs, a Boston Terrier and a French Bulldog.
I go to car meets and shows. I work on my projects. I take cruises down back roads with nowhere particularly important to be.
And I try to enjoy the moments I’m given.
Because after everything life has taught me, there’s one thing I’ve come to understand:
Tomorrow has never been promised.
